ISABELA

Isabela, Puerto Rico

Isabela’s history dates back to the time of the Taíno Indians, the indigenous people of Puerto Rico. The Taíno likely inhabited the region before the arrival of Christopher Columbus. Like much of Puerto Rico, Isabela became a Spanish colony after Columbus arrived in 1493. The Spanish influence shaped the town’s architecture and culture. The town’s name is said to honor Queen Isabella I of Castile.

Isabela officially became a municipality in 1819. During the 19th century, the town’s economy was largely based on agriculture, including sugarcane and tobacco cultivation. The sugar industry played a significant role in Isabela’s economy during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Many sugar cane plantations and mills were established in the region, contributing to the town’s growth.

Isabela is home to the Rafael Hernández Airport, named after a Puerto Rican aviator. The airport has played a role in connecting the town to other parts of Puerto Rico and beyond.
