La Casa del Cuento in Cayey, Puerto Rico

La Casa del Cuento is a cultural center in Cayey, Puerto Rico. It is also known as “Casa del Cuento y La Historia Cayeyana” . The center is dedicated to preserving and promoting the region’s cultural heritage through storytelling, music, and art. It is also home to the first cooperative publishing house (Cooplibri) in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean.

Cooplibri is a movement made up of seven founding members that aims to promote literary work through a series of services inspired by the solidarity economy to create and produce publications. After a proposal to the Mayor of Cayey, Hon. Rolando Ortiz Velázquez, a group of writers and educators found his commitment and support to use this historical structure in the heart of Cayey as the headquarters for this project.

Note from the Editor
On a personal note: I went to the Benjamin Harrison Vocational High School and graduated in the mid-80s. I was very happy to see this timeless structure -which was in total decay for many years- being brought back to its former glory moreover for such a wonderful project (I’m a bookworm myself).
