GURABO

Gurabo is a municipality located in the eastern central region of Puerto Rico. Gurabo was officially founded in 1815, though it has a history dating back to the indigenous Taíno people who inhabited the area. The town’s name is believed to be derived from the Taíno word “Gurabo,” meaning “where the wind is heard.”

Gurabo is situated in the central mountainous region of Puerto Rico, providing it with lush landscapes and scenic views. The municipality is known for its agricultural activities, including the cultivation of sugarcane, coffee, and plantains. Agriculture has historically played a significant role in Gurabo’s economy, with crops like sugarcane contributing to its growth. In recent years, there has been diversification in the economy with the development of commercial and industrial sectors.

Gurabo is home to various landmarks and attractions. One notable site is the Gurabo Water Park, offering recreational activities for locals and visitors. The town has several historical sites, including churches and plazas that showcase its colonial heritage.  Gurabo is known for hosting institutions of higher education, including the Gurabo Campus of the University of Puerto Rico.

Like many Puerto Rican towns, Gurabo celebrates traditional festivals and cultural events throughout the year. The festivals often feature music, dance, and religious traditions, providing a vibrant cultural experience. Gurabo has both urban and rural residential areas, offering a mix of housing options.
