San Lorenzo: A Town of Samaritans and Legends
San Lorenzo is a town and municipality of Puerto Rico, located in the eastern central region of the island. History of San Lorenzo
San Lorenzo was founded by Valeriano Muñoz de Oneca, Valeriano was a Spanish settler who donated 40 acres of land for the establishment of a town. The exact date of its foundation is not certain, as the original records were lost in a fire, but it is believed to be between 1811 and 1814. The town was named San Lorenzo, after Saint Lawrence, the patron saint of Muñoz de Oneca.
San Lorenzo was part of the Hato Grande de los Delgado, a large ranch that was granted by the Spanish crown to a family in the 16th century. The town was a strategic point for the Spanish empire in the New World. The town also witnessed the cultural and economic exchange between Spain, Africa, and the indigenous Taíno people, who inhabited the island before the arrival of the Europeans. San Lorenzo became a center of agriculture, cattle ranching, education, and religion, blending elements from different traditions and influences.
In 1898, Puerto Rico became a U.S. territory after the Spanish-American War, and San Lorenzo became a municipality. The town experienced significant changes in the 20th century, such as urbanization, industrialization, and political movements.
Current Status of San Lorenzo
San Lorenzo is currently the 27th most populous municipality in Puerto Rico, with about 37,700 residents, according to the 2020 census. It is also part of the San Juan-Caguas-Guaynabo Metropolitan Statistical Area. San Lorenzo’s economy is mainly based on manufacturing, and producing clothing, leather shoes, and electronic equipment. Agriculture, especially livestock and fruit, is also an important economic activity.
