Barrio Jájome in Cayey
Jájome Bajo is a barrio in the municipality of Cayey, Puerto Rico. The total area of Jájome Bajo is 3.47 square miles (9.0 km²), and it had a population of 519 in 2010. The barrio is part of the Sierra de Cayey and is located in Jájome Alto and Jájome Bajo of Cayey, barrio Carmen in Guayama, and barrio Quebrada Yeguas in Salinas.
Jájome Bajo has a rich history. It was mentioned in Spain’s gazetteers until Puerto Rico was ceded by Spain in the aftermath of the Spanish–American War under the terms of the Treaty of Paris of 1898 and became an unincorporated territory of the United States.
Jájome is known for its authentic Puerto Rican feel and is less touristy compared to other areas. The mountain weather here is significantly cooler than it is on the coast. Many runners travel here on weekends to get in their mileage and hill work. The area is also known for its country homesteads built during the interwar era (1917-1939), which exemplify a local Puerto Rican landscape design tradition. These properties link architectural typology with topography, and their gardens are integrated into the terrain as strategic features rather than as decoration.
We highly recommend visiting the small Barrio of Jájome Bajo. The route is very windy and panoramic. It is a bit off the beaten path while visiting the town of Cayey, but I can assure you that it is worth the trip.
