El Yunque Pre-Columbian Era
Before the arrival of Europeans, indigenous cultures inhabited the lower slopes of the Luquillo Mountains. The Taino people called it “Yuké,” meaning “white land.” Evidence of their presence, including petroglyphs, still lingers along waterways.
American Era
1903 President Theodore Roosevelt proclaimed the Luquillo Forest Reserve, which later became El Yunque National Forest. Managed by the U.S. Forest Service, it is the only tropical rainforest within the U.S. National Forest system. Its 29,000 acres harbor incredible biodiversity.
