El Monumento al Jíbaro Puertorriqueño, or the Monument to the Puerto Rican Countryman, is a significant landmark in Puerto Rico.
Contrary to popular belief that El Monumento al Jíbaro Puertorrqueño is located in Cayey, Puerto Rico, the monument is located in Barrio Lapa, in the municipality of Salinas, Puerto Rico. It’s situated on Puerto Rico Highway 52, km 49.0.
The Government of Puerto Rico built the monument to honor the Puerto Rican Jíbaro, a term used to refer to the island’s humble farmers and workers. The memorial is considered a symbol of national identity. The monument was sculpted by Tomás Batista, a renowned Puerto Rican artist who discovered his talent for wood carving while working with Spanish artist Ángel Botello Barros.
Tomás Batista was born in the town of Luquillo in 1935.
The work on the monument began around 1975 and was completed in 1976. The Monument to the Puerto Rico Countryman was officially opened on December 12, 1976, after that section of Highway 52 was completed. The monument is a rest stop for travelers and a popular spot for tourists and photography enthusiasts. It offers a beautiful view of the surrounding landscape, including the famous Las Tetas de Cayey mountains.
