Las Piedras located in the central-eastern region of Puerto Rico, is a charming town and municipality with a rich history. Las Piedras lies on the eastern side of Puerto Rico, although it’s not directly on the coast. The municipality covers a total area of 33.89 square miles (87.8 km²), with most of it being land. It’s surrounded by Yabucoa to the north, Canóvanas, and Río Grande to the south, Juncos and San Lorenzo to the east, and Naguabo and Humacao to the west.

Las Piedras boasts several natural attractions, including the Cueva del Indio, which houses original Taíno caves and ancient paintings that provide insights into the island’s native inhabitants. Las Piedras is approximately 45 minutes away from San Juan, Puerto Rico’s vibrant capital city. Additionally, it’s just a short 5-minute drive from Palmas del Mar, one of the largest resorts in the Caribbean.

The highest point in the Sierra de Luquillo mountain range (El Toro) lies on the boundary between Las Piedras and Río Grande.

Founded in 1793, Las Piedras has a storied past. After the Spanish–American War, Puerto Rico became a territory of the United States. In 1899, a census recorded a population of 8,602 residents in Las Piedras. More recently, Hurricane Maria in 2017 caused significant damage to the town, with 500 residences losing their roofs due to its powerful winds and heavy rainfall.
